Before start, Install External Share for Jira add-on from Atlassian Marketplace.

Refer to Get External Share for Jira document to install our add-on.

How to start

There are two ways to create an external link:

  • Select the desired issue, then set the share type (Issue, Board, Filter, Timeline) to generate the link.

  • Start by choosing the share type on the general app page, then create the link.


Create External Link directly from an issue

  1. Within your workspace, click on the issue you wish to share.

  2. Select External Share, then click the Create External Share Link button to generate a link.

  3. A preview of shared content window will appear.

  1. To create External Share links, navigate to Jira → More → Apps → External Share.

  2. Click Create External Share.

  3. Choose Share Type between Issue, Board, Filter, or Timeline.

  4. A preview of shared content window will appear.

You can select Issue, Board, Filter, or Timeline to generate an external link.

Configuration in preview

Once you click Share External Link, using any of the methods above, a preview window will open.

On the left panel, you can view the preview screen how your shared content will appear to external users, while on the right panel, you can adjust the settings to fit your needs.

Use the General, Permissions, Security, Custom Fields, and Extensions tabs to adjust the settings as needed. For guidance on setting default configurations, refer to the Project Configuration document.

  • In General tab, you can also select share type that you want to share.

  • Once you’ve made your changes, click the Preview button to see the updates in real-time.

Once an external link is created, close the preview window. In the issue view, you will see the created external link along with its URL. The URL can be easily copied and shared with anyone you want and opened in a web browser.

Share External Link via email

You can also send the link directly via email.

Click the button Send via email button to open Outlook. Before sending the email, you can customize the recipients, email title, and content. From Email Template, you can format the default email content to match your preferences.

For External viewers

To see how external share view (e.g., Board view, Filter view) appears for more than just issue sharing, visit our Screenshots page. Depending on the settings, external users may be able to edit issues, add comments or attachments, or update the issue's status. These options can be configured in link options.

Below is an example of what an external user sees when they access an issue view through a link shared via email.

External users with an email account can also access the shared Dashboard. Here, they can view shared content, manage subscriptions, and track activity. For more details on how logged-in external users interact with shared content. By default, shared issues display the Issue Summary, Description, Status, Assignee, Reporter, and Components. You can manage the shared fields in the Project Settings.
