Anonymous access in Atlassian Confluence Cloud allows users who are not logged in to view content in spaces that are appropriately configured.

When you make your content available to anonymous users, this means anyone on the internet. The anonymous access feature can’t accommodate sharing with some anonymous people and not others. It’s all or nothing.

The limitation of this method is that anyone with JSM portal access will also have access to Confluence. So, if you have external customers outside your organization, then they will be able to view the specified Confluence spaces and pages as well.

How to set up anonymous access:

Enable Anonymous Access Globally

  1. Log in as an Admin:

  2. Go to Global Permissions:

    • Navigate to Settings > Global permissions (you can find this under "Site settings" in Confluence administration).

  3. Allow Anonymous Access:

    • Look for the "Anonymous Access" section.

    • Check the box to allow anonymous users to access your Confluence instance.

 

Configure Space Permissions for Anonymous Users

After enabling global anonymous access, configure each space you want to make available to anonymous users.

  1. Open Space Settings:

    • Click on Space Settings (gear icon on the left sidebar).

  2. Edit Space Permissions:

    • Under the "Permissions" tab, find the Anonymous Access section.

    • Click Edit Permissions.

  3. Set Permissions for Anonymous Users:

    • Check the boxes to specify what actions anonymous users can perform:

      • View: Allow anonymous users to view pages and blog posts.

      • Add Comments: Allow anonymous users to comment on pages (optional).

      • Add Attachments: Allow anonymous users to add attachments (not recommended for public spaces).

 


Considerations for Anonymous Access

  • Data Privacy: Ensure that no sensitive or internal information is made available publicly.

  • Restrictions: Individual pages can have restrictions that override space-wide permissions.

  • Search Engine Indexing: Anonymous access pages may be indexed by search engines, making them publicly searchable.
